An Invitation to the Past

Lev’s New Hobby
A branch rather than a journey
Lev Zubov tells Wilf Netherton about a server that allows information to pass between their world and a point in the past. Contact creates a divergent continuum, or stub, rather than changing the history that produced Lev’s own present.
The human interface
Lev hires people in the stub as polts, paying them in their own currency and using contemporary knowledge to make money there. Netherton finds the idea compelling but abstract. He does not yet understand that treating a lived society as an investment environment will expose its inhabitants to consequences they did not choose.
A Gift with Consequences

Security Becomes a Connection
Netherton’s proposal
Trying to impress Daedra West, Netherton arranges for her to receive the services of Burton Fisher, a polt with military experience. Daedra declines the gift and passes Burton’s services to her sister, Aelita West, without anticipating how consequential that transfer will become.
The fork takes hold
Through this personal gesture, Burton is placed on duty around Aelita’s residence. His sister later substitutes for him and witnesses the killing. A careless act of professional boundary-crossing therefore connects Lev’s experiment to a murder, an endangered witness, and the scrutiny of Ainsley Lowbeer.
The Rival Account

A Second Hand on the Server
An unknown competitor
Ash discovers that someone else has accessed Lev’s stub and hired an assassin through a darknet market. The target is Burton, apparently because Flynne’s account of Aelita’s killing could expose someone with an interest in keeping the event concealed.
Money as a weapon
The competing party proves capable of acting both in the stub and in Flynne’s present, where hired men threaten her family. Its identity is initially unknown, but its reach shows that Lev’s group no longer controls the experiment. The God Club’s private game has become an asymmetrical contest in which the inhabitants of the branch reality bear immediate physical danger.
Markets Under Pressure

The Contest Scales Up
Algorithmic investment
Lev’s side funds its stub operations by directing trading algorithms with help from quants at the London School of Economics. A rival source of future information appears to have comparable or greater financial power, and both sides’ activity begins to strain markets.
Local effects of distant decisions
Macon explains that these are not ordinary investments: future actors can examine the present, learn what they need, and act with capabilities unavailable to local competitors. Coldiron’s rapid accumulation of companies, land, and political influence makes the contest visible in the everyday life of the county, even while its larger purpose remains uncertain.
A Rival’s Advantage Breaks

The Contest Changes Course
Hamed’s commercial scheme
At Newgate, Hamed al-Habib admits that the apparent death on the island was a staged escape. His real purpose is to monetize the floating island he created, while the City Remembrancer, Sir Henry Fishbourne, backs the scheme and appears invested in the rival operation.
A shift in leverage
Ainsley Lowbeer acts against Sir Henry, changing the balance of influence that had enabled the attack on Flynne’s world. Coldiron acquires a significant share of Hefty’s parent company, and the planned Homeland Security raid is withdrawn. The outcome does not erase the damage already done, but it deprives the rival operation of its former advantage.
